Promontory Drive

The Dragonettes 2018 inst detail. cast aluminium, automotive paint H500 x D100 x L10000 cm

This public sculpture project occupies the entire length of the 100 meter long median strip on Promontary Drive at Shell Cove . The project encompasses 52 individual sculptural elements, varying in colouration and pattern, and in height between 250 and 500 cm.

The sequence of sculptural forms are loosely based on shapes and patterns found on the Weedy Seadragon. Shellharbour’s Bushrangers Bay Aquatic Reserve at Bass Point is one of best diving and snorkelling sites in NSW. Listed as the highlight of its aquatic life forms is the Weedy Seadragon Phyllopteryx taeniolatus.

“The reserve protects the whole bay including the shoreline, intertidal zones, kelp forests and submarine cliffs. Its rock pools are home to many invertebrates, while the seagrass beds are home to a variety of fish including sea spiders and the mesmerising weedy sea dragons that this area is renowned for.“[1]

The DRAGONETTES are to mark Shellcove as a site of human habitation in the immediate vicinity of an outstanding aquatic environment.
